General insurance

General insurances are designed to arrange security in case a criminal act, an accident or a natural phenomenon creates expenses or potential loss of the everyday items and luxury goods the expat worked hard for.

Types of general insurances

There are several types of general insurances to provide the security for the expatriate. Examples are:

• Building insurance. Insures against a large number of causes of damages to buildings.
• Car insurance. There are several types of coverage to choose from. Examples are: third party liability coverage which covers against claims against the driver, collision coverage which covers against damage to the expat's vehicle itself and comprehensive coverage which covers pretty much everything including theft and vandalism.
• Casualty/accident insurance. Insures against the consequences of accidents. A cash sum is only paid in case of accidental death or permanent disability.
• Disability insurance. A policy that insures the expat against the risk that disability will make working and thus earning money impossible.
• Home contents insurance. This insurance covers damages to or loss of the home contents of the expats due to fire, storm or theft, for example.
• Legal aid insurance. In case the expat might need legal assistance, a legal aid insurance covers the expenses made.
• Personal liability insurance. This insurance is designed to offer specific protection against third party claims based on liability for the expat's children or pets.
• Travel insurance. An insurance to cover financial, medical expenses and other losses while travelling either within the home country of the expats, or internationally.
• Bicycle insurance. This insurance covers damage or loss of the expat's bicycle.

Expats are required to effect certain insurances by law. This depends on the expatriate’s personal situation. Compulsory insurances are, for example, a car insurance when the expat owns a car and a health insurance when the expatriate lives and works in the Netherlands.
