Disability insurance

If an expat loses his/her job, another job can be found to earn an income. Yet, if an expat suffers an illness or accident that prevents him/her from being able to work for an extended period of time, he/she can’t earn money in any other way. Therefore it is wise to have a disability insurance.

A disability insurance will provide the expat with a regular monthly income if disability occurs.

Expats working and residing in the Netherlands can take out a disability insurance as an addition to or replacement of the Dutch social security system.

Types of disability insurances.

There are two types of disability insurances. The first type of disability insurance will pay a claim in case the expat is unable to work in any occupation. The second disability insurance will pay a claim as long as an expatriate is unable to return to his/her own occupation. It is also possible to combine both types of disability insurance. For example, the first two years a claim is paid if the expat is unable to return to his/her own occupation. After this period the claim is only paid if the expat is unable to return to any occupation.

Waiting period

Each disability insurance has a waiting period before a claim will be paid. The waiting period the expat chooses depends on the amount of time the expat is able to manage without an income. This can vary from, for example, one month up to two years.

Permanent disability

If the injury or illness is such that the expat will never be able to work again, the insurer can continue the regular payments for the agreed period of time. Common periods are 2 years, 5 years or until the expat reaches the age of 65. With most insurers the expat is able to insure up to 75% of the gross annual income at the time of his/her disability.
